"I would like to give a lot of credit to the 240 Marines of C Company, 1st Battalion, 24th Marines, of the 4th Division who landed on Iwo Jima on D-Day. Only 31 of us survived. Half of us were the walking wounded so the other half was pretty lucky. They had some scratches, every one had nicks. I still had pieces of shrapnel in the back of my head. It was kind of sad to me because there were so few of us left out of the company. Where’s Cusimano, where’s DeNunzio? Where’s Marston? Where’s Taylor, where’s Buzzard, where’s Miller? It was sad.”
- Sgt. Major Mike Mervosh USMC (Ret.)

Chaplain John Wolf on the USS Frederick Funston told the Marines of the 2d Division how his ship felt about their fellow passengers, “When all is said and done, we give you a lot of credit for landing on that beach [Saipan] while we remain relatively safe on our ship. We would never admit it, of course, but we do admire you for the part you will play in the final victory and we will be only too glad to take you home again whenever you finish your job.”
